A colorful hideaway in the hills of Glendale, this 1920s Spanish-style cottage was reimagined to create a more usable home for the changing needs of a young family. A complete remodel expanded the footprint and created a stronger connection to the outdoors with a flexible accessory structure in the backyard and a pergola over the existing front porch that acts as a secondary living and entertaining area. Custom millwork throughout the dining and living spaces provides much needed storage and houses the clients’ ample record collection. The addition of bold repeating checkerboard motifs visually connects the interiors, complementing the arched passageways, cove ceilings and white plaster interior that are original to the building. The studio also expanded the kitchen and added a second bathroom, creating a significantly more functional space that will serve the clients’ needs for many years to come.
